Nintendo Revokes Splatoon 3 World Championship Win Amid Controversy

Nintendo has announced that the winners of the Splatoon 3 World Championship will have their win revoked, and the in-game banner featuring their likenesses will be altered. This decision follows revelations about the winning team's inappropriate behavior both inside and outside of Splatoon 3.

Although Nintendo may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of eSports, the company has a history of competitive participation in certain titles. The Splatoon 3 World Championship, initially delayed from January due to bomb threats against Nintendo and its employees, took place in April with teams from six different regions competing. However, the victorious team is no longer celebrating.

Nintendo officially declared that Jackpot, the winning team, will have its victory vacated and will not receive the associated trophies. This decision follows the emergence of numerous images and videos about a month ago, showing Jackpot team members mocking other Splatoon 3 players with racist comments and sharing offensive memes and images. While game developers often take action against racist behavior, the actions of these competitors are especially damaging given Nintendo's family-friendly image.

Additionally, Nintendo announced an upcoming update to Splatoon 3 that will modify the team's winning banner. Originally, the banner, which fans could use to celebrate the victory, featured the winners' in-game likenesses and the World Championship logo. Although it is unclear how Nintendo will alter the banner, it is expected that the four team members will be removed. There is also a possibility that the banner will be completely replaced with an unrelated one to fully dissociate the game from the team's actions.
